Author- Patricia Bracewell
If you like Outlander (the book) and Reign (Netflix), this is the book for you!
Historical Fiction
1002, young Emma of Normandy is bargained off to King Athelred and becomes the Queen of England. But it isn't that simple-- the angling, the treachery, the quest for power, all drive this tightly woven storyline. The characters have depth, few are one dimensional.
What I really appreciate is the author's writing style. She is a master of period writing while not overplaying to the extend it sounds like a different language. Also, the research is amazing! Don't skip the author's notes at the end where she ties facts to this work of fiction-- most of what you read did happen. And that makes it even more fun!
If you like Shadow on the Crown, there are two additional books continuing the life of Emma of Normandy. While this book is part of a trilogy, you do not need to read all three to experience a satisfying finish to this one.
